Temples in Kerala Kerala has a very rich cultural heritage, dating back to many centuries. Kerala houses some of the most beautiful and sacred temples of South India. The temples of Kerala are known for their unique structural design, which is completely different from the other areas in India. The temples of Kerala have steep roofs covered with copper sheets in order to prevent structural damage from excessive monsoon showers.Guruvayoor Temple 29 kms North-West Of Thrissur, Kerala, Guruvayoor is the place where the famous Sri Krishna Temple is situated. It is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centers of Kerala. This ancient historic temple is hidden in mystery. It is believed, the temple was created by 'Guru', the 'preceptor of the gods' and 'Vayu', the 'god of winds'. Sree Venkatramana Temple Sri Venkatesh Bhat of Mangalore came to Cannanore and opened a small Bhajana cum Worship hall in the 17th century, which was earlier called Venkatesh Bhat's Mutt. Later, the Prathistha of Sri Venkattramana was performed and shrine of Goddess Mahamaya was also built and it came to be known as Sree Venkataramana Temple. Sabarimala Temple Sabarimala is one of the most famous pilgrim centers of Kerala. The temple is located atop a hill in the Western Ghats. This holy shrine at Sabarimala temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is interesting to note that Sabarimala is named after Shabari, who did penance so that she could meet Lord Rama. Two main events take place at the Sabarimala temple every year. These are the Mandal Puja and the Makara Sankranti Puja, which are celebrated from November to Middle of January. Sri Padmanabh Swamy Temple Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is an amazing structure with a 100 feet high 'gopuram', built in Dravidian style. The temple is also known for the Mural paintings and stone carvings.
